A Brief History of the Royal Family Businesses

George "G.L." Royal - Lake Harbor Store - 1931

George “G.L.” Royal opened his first mercantile store in Bean City, Florida in 1931.  Having previously managed commissaries for several different companies (the most recent being U.S. Sugar), G.L. loved the retail business and had a knack for it.  Due to the Great Depression of the 1930’s, growth was slow, but G.L. was steadily able to save money whenever he could and invest it back into the business. By the 1950’s, he had grown the business into multiple general, grocery, and department stores in the Glades area around Lake Okeechobee.

Eventually, Winn Dixie would purchase the grocery portion of the operations and over the next several decades, under the direction of G.L.’s son Larry, the Royal Family Businesses evolved and expanded into different avenues, including commercial real estate, furniture stores, and fast food/quick service restaurants.

Today, the Royal Family Business operations include:

  • QSR Franchising
    • Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen
    • Captain D’s Seafood Kitchen
    • Chick Salad Chick
  • Royal’s Furniture stores
  • Ownership & management of nearly 500,000 sq. ft. of commercial retail space.

While our operations now encompass the greater South Florida area, the company to this day is still headquartered and rooted in the Glades, which will always be considered home.
